we are he following some breaking news related to superstorm sandy. take a look at this measmsing pictures. at least 50 homes have been destroyed in raging fire in tweens queens, new york. this is the beach town of breezy point. basically one of the lowest points of new york city. -- take a look at these amazing pictures. the fire has gone for six alarms. we will keep you updated throughout the morning. superstorm sandy slam ad shore last night. at least 13 are reported dead. >> and over 5 million or in the dark. schools from virginia to maine are closed again today and there are states of emergency declared in eight states n new york city, transportation officials are worried about seawater flooding some of subways. >> another tough day for commuters ahead. once again, metrobus service and train service will not run this morning. an announcement on when service

will be restored will be made later on today after metro is able to assess the damage from sandy. also, metro access service will remain suspended all day tuesday. now, customers can check metro service status by phone. the number to call is 202-637- 7000. thousands of people are without power this morning so can you imagine with this storm. dominion virginia reporting nearly 118,000 outages. pepco dealing with about 27,000. bge reporting just over 91,000 in five counties including montgomery and anne arundel. smeco reports nearly 6200 outages. outages. potomac edison, more than 62,000 customers without power in maryland. >> the superstorm is not just

bringing rain. west virginia is now getting hit with snow. a blizzard warning is in effect for at least 14 counties for high winds and heavy wet snow. the state's highest elevations could get as much as 3 feet. a state of emergency has been declared. the snow is being blamed for at least one deadly traffic accident. there is also flooding being reported in some areas. >> the ski slopes will reap some benefits, i guess. >> that is the up side. >> hard to believe that is the same storm. >> i know it is. >> it did some of everything. it didn't bring some heat and that is the only thing. snow, rain, wind, flooding. >> and it's cold. >> and it's cold and windy now. you saw in lauren's live shot down at ocean city, it has gotten really chilly out. that will be the other big story today. our temperatures only in the mid-40s for affect highs. we'll have to endure another day. we have one more day with sort of that transition away from

our storm. >> break out the big jackets. >> yeah, you need the jacket today. let's get to the maling with so and in some spots, some heavy rain. this is your live look there. you can see the yellowing and reds indicating pretty good rainfall rates. here in washington, just a steady rain but surrounding the region including just to the south, we have pretty good rain. all of this is the leftover bands associated with sandy that continue to pinwheel down and around our area of low pressure which is just to the north. it is just into southern pennsylvania as we speak. you will be able to see the circulation right here on your map. there is a look at your satellite-radar. look, it is incredible how big this storm is, all the way back to cleveland and up to northern new england dealing with rain showers at this hour associated with the leftovers of sandy there. you can see that we're sort of in the middle of t we'll be dealing with rain here for

several more hours. our winds, which were gusting in places 60 to 70 miles per hour last night will slowly start to fall back and they will be blowing 20 to 30 today with occasional gusts over 40, maybe occasionally 50. the rain will taper off. win gust is, reagan national, 26. still blowing pretty good off to the north and west. 41 in martinsburg and 31 in hagerstown. it will be quite breezy here, windy at times with highs only topping out in the mid- to upper 40s. 47 in washington. but parts of the area don't get out of the upper 30s for daytime highs. >> just to show how windy the conditions are still are out there, according to the maryland transportation authority, they are saying at least as of an hour ago that the bay bridge is still closed so wind is still an issue as you mentioned. thank you, tucker. >> time to talk to julie wright

about the morning commutes. >> we are waking up to a number of signals not working around the area, flooding, storm damage, trees down, wires down, you know, that old song and dance. that is what we're finding here. 214 at rieber road is shut down. you will find accident activity southbound on the baltimore- washington parkway approaching 450 tying up the left side of the highway. still a lot of tree debris and leaves to clean up off the highway so be careful. again this morning, service has been suspended on metro against today which means metrobus, metro access, montgomery county ride-on buses, service suspended. amtrak northeast corridor, no service again today. we've got a lot of clean-up in that needs to be done on the

welcome back to our coverage of the superstorm sandy. we've been covering ocean city quite a bit. and really the storm packed a powerful punch. >> and continuous rain and high winds causing flooded roads and tree damage. fox 5's lauren demarco is live there now with a look at sandy's impact on that area. good morning to you once again, lauren. >> reporter: good morning. we continue to feel the impact with the heavy weekends and a little bit of sand in my eyes this morning. it feels like the rain has let up. very, very light, barely a drizzle but it is still very windy and cool. the ocean still raging but the waves not anywhere near as high as we saw during the height of the storm yesterday. so that is some good news. nothing coming up to the seawall at this point. i do believe that we've got some photos of those waves that crashed over the seawall on to the boardwalk. we had significant flooding on

the boardwalk itself and on to the streets. viewers had sent in some rather amazing pictures of some of that and also of the flooding in the downtown area. everything below 17th street is in in that low-lying area. there were mandatory evacuations in place do there and during the height of the storm yesterday evening, they saw several feet of flooding. about 20 to 30 people had to be removed from their homes. no injuries reported so also some good news there. right now, everything below route 90 remains shut down to traffic. also, route 90 itself and route other inbound closed. you cannot head into ocean city. that remains the case this morning. as far as power outages, the very far downtown area does remain shut off. that was done on purpose to protect the power grid.

up here where we are, we are at 17th street at the boardwalk and we have power. some good news there. you can see that the streetlights are without power along the boardwalk itself so they've been shorted out at this point. very cold, very windy and that is the latest here. >> all right. some incredible pictures there coming out of ocean city. we'll continue to watch that for you throughout the morning. >> she mentioned power in that area. we've got hundreds of thousands of people in the area who are without power but the situation could have been far worse. >> it could have been. up next, we'll get a live update from pepco plus we are checking your weather and traffic as well. stay with us. time now is 5:12. welcome back. you know the storm blew through the capital of maryland yesterday afternoon as well. several stores in annapolis taped up their windows. you see the sandbags piled up there but the harbor did not flood. the surge of the water was actually pushed away from annapolis which tucker said would happen. even when high tide hit around 6:00, the docks were still not under water. they prepared. >> it is called a blowout. the winds pushed the water away. now, we're concerned today because the winds have shifted out of the south and we'll have a a couple of high tides today and the moon was full yesterday

and with a good southerly breeze today, we could have flooding issues in annapolis, oldtown alexandria. the story changes a little bit but we still have some issues we have to deal with. >> don't take away the sandbags. >> right. if you are down there in downtown annapolis, you want to keep the sand bagged for another 4 hours or so until the winds start to fall off. >> good advice. what is else is going on? >> still raining. we are not done with the rain yet. some pretty good rain totals so far. in fact, much of the area, 3, 4, 5, 6 inches of rain through the midnight hours. you can see the rain heaviest at the moment to the east of washington pushing out towards annapolis here along the bay, the western shore of the bay. we are getting pretty good rain and then to the north and west up into montgomery county, it looks like laytonsville as this is all working down from the north and the west. you can see most of the area still unfortunately getting the

rain out there and i think we'll continue to have flooding issues. we have got flood warnings for parts of the area. that will become another story over the next couple of days as all that water has to work its way down. let me show you what is left over with sandy. the good news, the winds have started to fall back but we've still got this huge shield of precipitation in the form of rain and even winter weather off to our south and west where they've still got all kinds of snow warnings flying out into portions of west virginia in the mountains out in west virginia. you can see that big swirl. northeast is we are still drawing moisture off the atlantic and still being pulled around that center of circulation here in southern pennsylvania. it will very gradually lift off to the north and west and take with it some rain showers. after morning rain, i think you will see some scattered showers later today. by tomorrow, by halloween, things should gradually improve. still going to be a lot of clouds around tomorrow but at

least we'll get rid of the rain. how much wind did we get yesterday? reagan national, 61 was the peak wind gust. dulles, 54. we thought parts of the area might see wind approaching hurricane strength. 69 in annapolis. 76 in laytonsville. 60, 70 was the general range with the wind gusts. won't be quite as windy today. that is good news. 26 with current wind gusts in washington. i think we'll see the peak 40, maybe 50-mile an hour wind gusts. still 41 in martinsburg. we are not quite down with the wind yet. rain is likely. still windy out there. south and west. i mentioned the wind are out of the south and that will push the water back up the bay. 47 the daytime high. could be a gust of 50 plus although i think as far as dangerous winds, things should be improving very quickly. there is your accu-weather seven-day forecast. we stay cool all week long.

temperatures in the 50s. overnight lows near 40 in town. lots of 30s the next couple of mornings off to the west and north. that is a look at weather. let's do some traffic and find out if anybody who is on the roadways this morning besides julie wright. >> i can tell you that they are not on metro. metrorail service suspended. just want to update this metrobus, metro access suspended. we need to map out a couple of issues for you. tucker, we were talking about flooding. we've got a lot of that to deal with this morning. we've got wires down along 198 between swieter lane and old gunpowder road. that keeps the roadway shut down until further notice. of course, 108 over at new hampshire avenue dealing with storm damage. new hampshire avenue near 410, wires down there. -- we've got wires down along 198 between sweitzer lane and

old gunpowder road. you are talking about the winds. still very windy over at the chesapeake bay bridge and the bay bridge remains shut down until further notice. route 1 at 286 is blocked off. there is just a laundry list of areas where we're dealing with flooding, trees down, wires down, storm damage to clean up. if you can, if you have the day off, if you can stay put, let authorities get out there and clean up a lot of this so we can get you back out there sooner rather than later. if you do have to be out on the roads this morning, if you encounter traffic lights that are not working, treat it as a four-way stop. if you come up to an area with flooding, do not attempt to drive through it. turn around and go the other way. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. power crews hope to begin to restore power to the thousands left in the dark because of sandy. >> on the phone with us right now is kathy bowtrick with pepco to give us an update on

when customers can expect power. >> how many without power right now and what the time line is. >> we have 25,029 customers across our service area without power. approximately 4,000 in the district. approximately 16,000 in montgomery cou00 in prince george's county. right now, the crews have been out all night. we had a peak since i've been on of about 41,000 earlier this evening. crews have been working to restore power. we don't have a current estimated time of restoration because the full assessment hasn't been completed and that won't be done until the storm is over but we are working as fast as we possibly can. like i said, crews have been out all night and we're anxious as anyone to get full crews out there. >> now, kathy, i see we are -- you probably can't see this. but we're taking a look at

video right now of crews that were trimming tree branches, it appears. i know that was part of pepco's plan to try to help in cases like this. do you feel that the work you did in trimming those trees really did maybe perhaps keep that number of outages down during the storm? >> it certainly did contribute to it. it is also every storm is different. sometimes we are -- our service area gets hit a little bit harder. sometime not but we certainly believe that the infrastructure improvements and tree trimming have made a difference in the results of this storm. >> do you still want people to call you if the power is out? >> absolutely. please call 1-877-pepco 62. as people are getting on the and about, they will see possibly wires down. they should call immediately. it could be our wire or a telecommunications wire but regardless, they should call and let us make the assessment.

the high winds from the storm brought trees down across our region. >> one tree fell on a house in

laurel with melanie alnwick is reporting live this morning. >> reporter: good morning. we've visited a couple of locations here in laurel because they've actually had several trees that have come down on homes and some are that in danger of coming down. prince george's county itself has had several roads shut down. nine of them at this count and many of those also in laurel. i want to quickly get to pete piringer who is now the spokesperson for the city of laurel. >> hello. >> tell me the situation around the city of laurel right now. >> we have pretty widespread power outages not far from here in the old town area. probably about 5,000 people are so without power in this area. we've had about a dozen or so trees down on houses. we have had some property damage but fortunately, no injuries. that has really been the brunt of the activities, the trees down, power outages and some high water situations. >> reporter: what is the concern about this tree that is behind us here? i'm not sure if you can see it right here, it looks like there

is a couple of branches there, but it looks like it is actually split, right, pete? >> this is at all saints road, some people might know it. a large tree split. we thought it would come down. when it does come down, it will knock down the power light, the traffic signal and really cause a problem here. right now, it is just hanging on but it is a large tree. it is split in half and we're just waiting for it to come down. >> reporter: this is the sort of situation where we're not sure that -- there could be more to come, right? >> well, we've had our team out along with the laurel police department. we need to wait for day break or get a little light are out here. a lot of debris in side streets and we do have widespread power outages. but i think it will be a bad situation. when people get up in the morning, it will be a lot different from when they went to bed last night we do have a

we're bringing you a live look right now there from ocean city, maryland this morning after hurricane sandy moved her way through. this morning, still a lot of wind and some rain still hanging around out there as you can see our camera being blown around from our crews stayinged there. it is tuesday, october 30th, the day after the storm. -- our crews stationed there. here at home, there are still lots of closings to report. metro is closed again this morning. we are hoping to get an update on the situation and when service will resume later on today. >> federal government offices are closed again today and so are most local government and schools. -- government offices and schools. there is a complete list of closings on myfoxdc.com. >> tucker barnes is here now. >> yeah. >> of a balkan busy man the

last couple of days. >> getting a little tired at this point. >> come on, tucker. >> a little bit more left. >> you got to push through. >> i can handle it. we've got rain that continues for fall across the region. here is the good news. the very blustery, gusty winds we had last night have subsided. we still have breezy conditions out there but dangerous winds, i think we're done with those. that is the good news. bad news, still raining across the region. still dealing with the potential for flooding. much of the area under a flood warning until 10:30 this morning. julie has been talking about it, some runoff, some flooding on the roadways. some of the creeks and rivers are starting to flood their banks. that will be the next issue. much of the area has picked up 5-plus inches of rain. it continues to rain out there. it will rain for much of the day but things will start to taper off later this afternoon. after a good soaking rain here early, we'll see things turning to scattered showers later

today and that should be good news. here is the big picture. just an amazing look at your satellite-radar as we continue to watch the big swirl out there. the center of what is left of sandy is just to our north there into southern pennsylvania and check out all of the winter weather back into west virginia. snowfall rates right now out in west virginia i've just been reading or 3 to 4 inches an hour in some places. that is absolute whiteout across portions of west virginia. obviously f you are traveling in that direction -- if you are traveling in that direction, be ready for winter weather as it is here to stay for the remainder of the day. current wind gust here in washington, 26. 33 in ocean city. 32 in columbus. a very chilly day, highs only in the mid-40s. this would be a day more typical of january than october. so make sure you bring a jacket. if after he lost electricity, you're probably not watching. but if you are watching and

you've lost electricity, make sure you have plenty of blankets. it will be very chilly. >> they may be watching on the internet. >> we are live streaming. >> or on the phone. >> i just remember all the people come plopping about how hot it was a couple of months ago. >> you were one of them, fyi. -- complaining about how hot it was a couple of months ago. >> i on the other hand was not one of them. i'm standing in the lobby of the hotel, i'm like oh, my gosh, it's so cold. my hat is off to everyone who is at home unfortunately without power this morning. my heart goes out to you. on the roads, i just got through telling a couple of coworkers, it is either flooded, shut down because of wires, shut down because of trees down or just impassable because of the storm damage out there. we even have problems to report northbound 95. let's start off with an accident possibly involving an overturned vehicle. 395 for the most part quiet. once you are able to get out to

the major arteries, they are pretty much clear. we are dealing with wet pavement but no incidents to report right now. southbound 270, we do have report of a large industry hanging down in the right leap here at father -- right lane here at father hurley boulevard so heads up there. be careful heading out the front door because we are finding a lot of flooding. storm damage closes a portion of 198 between sweitzer lane and old gunpowder road. we have wires down in the roadway tying up 108 between new hampshire avenue and 108. we've got new hampshire avenue at 410. wires down in the roadway there. flooding closing 29 between lockwood and university boulevard. we've got problems a little further east. water street shut down at route 4, that is to be expected. 214 at river road closed off because of flooding. you get where i'm going with this. a lot of flooding. we have a lot of water to yet reveed re-- to yet recede.

let the clean-up begin so we can get you out hopefully again by tomorrow. windy conditions and the bay bridge is closed off until further notice. that's a check of your fox 5 on-timetraffic. imetraffic. >> thank you. the superstorm blamed for at least 16 deaths this morning. seven in the new york region. now, at the height of the storm, more than five million people across the east coast were without power including a large part of manhattan. earlier yesterday, a construction crane across the street from carnegie hall collapsed. this is a picture of it here leaving it hanging 80 stories above west 57th street. the new york stock exchange closed again today and battery park saw record-setting storm surge. flooding has been a huge problem across the city. also, take a look at this scene at the world trade center construction site. sandy's heavy rains create water falls there and the rain flooded the city's subway system too. there is no word yet when it might reopen as it recovers from what officials say is the

worst disaster in its 108-year history. we are following breaking news related to superstorm standee also in the new york area, at least 50 homes have been destroyed in a raging fire in queens, new york. this is the beach town of breezy point. basically, one of the lowest points of new york city. the fire started around 11:00 last night. it has gone to six alarms. so it's real disaster there coming out of the storm. we'll continue to keep you updated throughout the morning on that disaster as well. those pictures, it is just ridiculous. 50 homes. >> not something you expect to see in the mid all of a storm, a fire raging like that when there has been wind and rain. you can see what can happen with this. >> superstorm sandy hit our area pretty hard as well especially along the delmarva coast. >> ocean city took a hard hit.

lauren demarco is live there this morning. >> high tide at 9:00. things are starting to kick up here. we are starting to see the waves getting a bit higher and all the ocean now coming about 20 yards closer in as it approaches the seawall. wind gusts here up to 38 miles per hour . during the height of the storm, they were up to 58 miles per hour. cheer here and this cold morning and we'll continue to feel the impact of the storm. ocean city, no match for what superstorm sandy brought. right now, both bridges that head into town are closed to inbound traffic. the flood waters downtown south of 17th street are receding but much of the area is still without power. at the height of the storm, roads were flooded several feet deep. dozens of families had to be evacuated. boats broke loose from the docks where the storm pushed up water from the bay pounding the

town from all sides. sandbags were no defense. severe flooding here at mackey's bayside bar and grill. i'm standing in water almost up to my knees. this is right off of 54th street and the parking lot and bay pretty much become one at this point. the town's landmark fishing pier, perhaps the biggest blow. half of it is gone washed away by the constant beating of the mop sister waves. >> what happened is the pilings on the outer portion of the wave action that kle under the it was receiving. they lost a number of pile go ahead and they began to fall. >> oh, my gosh. >> the storm surge broke over the seawall dumping water and sand on the boardwalk. it ripped up benches bolted to the boardwalk dumping them into the streets. and we mentioned the fishing

welcome back. hundreds of thousands of people are left in the dark this morning in d.c., maryland and virginia. here are the current numbers for you. dominion still by far with the most without power with 120,000 customers out in northern virginia. pepco, right now, dealing with about 25,000. pge has 88,000 outages in montgomery, prince george's, calvert, anne arundel and howard county. we do expect the numbers to continue to go down. >> trees came down throughout our area because of the storm and that includes a major incident in laurel, maryland where a huge tree fell right onto a house. this was the scene on county road. this massive tree fell from the front yard and landed on the house. no word on any injuries but the

house sustained significant damage. the laurel mayor declared an emergency in effect until further notice. >> west virginia now getting pounded with snow. they were yesterday as well. it happened when a winter storm merged with sandy, and a blizzard warning still in effect for at least 14 counties for high winds and heavy, wet snow. the state's high of the el vagues could get as much as 3 feet. there is also flooding being reported in some areas as well. just look at the winter wonderland. that is just out to our west and here we are experiencing the wind and rain. >> it is amazing that this storm was able to do all these different things all at once. >> yes. >> just crazy. >> a storm of the decade. >> that's right. that is the superstorm right now. coming up next on fox 5 morning news. >> we'll have the latest on metro this morning. rails, buses, metro access. they are still shut down. we'll find out what has to happen before things are up and running again. we are back in a moment.

damage, trees down, lights out, that sort of thing. that is the kind of day it is out here on the roads. virginia, haven't forgotten about you. here we go. woodburn, south of gallows road for flooding here. we have reports of a tree down along the northbound side of the gw parkway approaching spout run. heads up there. again, waking up to a number of signal lights that are not working so you need to treat them as four way stops. crash reported possibly involving an overturned vehicle northbound 95 before you reach the exit for quantico. bristow over in manassas, we have reports of wires down this and route 1, approaching 286, that remains blocked off because of flooding. of floodin if you see standing water, turn around, do not drown. do not make an attempt to travel through that. if you travel east, we have the flooding. windy conditions over at the

bay bridge which means the bay bridge remains closed off until further notice. route 1, flooding reported. we've got storm damage along 198 between sweitzer lane and old gunpowder road. there are problems along 108 up near new hampshire avenue. new hampshire avenue at 410 for wires down. 29 shut down at four corners because of standing water. bw parkway southbound at 410, accident activity reported along the left side of the highway. it gives you guys an idea of what you are waking up to. if you don't have to be out on the roads again this morning, if you can, stay home, we strongly suggest you do so and give the authorities time to clean up this mess. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. >> more commuter news now. metro closed again this morning. >> before things are up and running again, officials need to make sure sandy didn't damage the roads or the rails. joining us now by phone is dan stessel.

would ban all abortions and contraception seemed a bit extreme. so i looked into it. turns out, romney doesn't oppose contraception at all. in fact, he thinks abortion should be an option in cases of rape, incest, or to save a mother's life. this issue's important to me, but i'm more concerned about the debt our children will be left with. i voted for president obama last time, but we just can't afford four more years. early voting is closed again today in maryland and the district because of the superstorm. >> maryland governor marten o'malley has extended early voting until this friday, november 2nd. d.c.'s board of elections will provide updates on its plans later on today. >> it is hard to believe but we are just one week out from election day. i know we kind of got sidetrackedded with the storm and all. president obama canceled campaign events today to monday were to the superstorm from the white house. republican challenger mitt romney also canceled campaign plans in ohio today. both are focusing on response and relief efforts. straight ahead at 6:00. >> we continue to follow
